Community Forum Addresses Wakemed Merger
Members of the community expressed their concerns about WakeMed's proposed merger with Atrium Health during a community meeting attended by WakeMed CEO Donald Gintzig. Despite WakeMed's claim that the merger will result in a $2 billion investment, patients, community members, and public officials have criticized the merger.
According to WakeMed, this investment will create jobs and improve healthcare in response to the region's growing population. For many long-term patients, the merger has sparked fears about the future of a hospital system they have relied on for decades. Another significant concern raised was whether losing local control might impact WakeMed's longstanding commitment to serving low-income patients.
Throughout the discussion, residents called for increased transparency and urged WakeMed to disclose the complete agreement. Reports indicate that only a limited number of Wake County commissioners and their legal advisors have been permitted to examine the agreement. Wake County Commissioner Cheryl Stallings mentioned that the review process is still in its initial phases.
