NC Representative Resigns from position

North Carolina Representative Cecil Brockman has stepped down from his position amid allegations of sexual crimes. Brockman resigned from his legislative position on Friday following accusations of sexual offenses against a 15-year-old.

As reported by the Associated Press, three weeks before his resignation, House Speaker Destin Hall announced a committee would look into the allegations against him. According to records, Brockman tried to contact the victim and leveraged his position to find out where she was. Brockman, a Democrat from High Point, has served in the House since 2015. His resignation letter stated that he must concentrate on his defense due to the seriousness of the allegations. Leaders from both political parties, along with Democratic Governor Josh Stein, had called for Brockman to resign following his arrest three weeks prior.

Republican House Speaker Destin Hall announced a bipartisan committee to investigate the allegations and potentially recommend expulsion, referencing the state constitution's provision allowing the House to remove its members.

Brockman is currently in jail with a bond exceeding $1 million, and a hearing to discuss a possible reduction of the bond is set for Monday.
